In-Person Counseling in the Twin City Metro Area at White Bear Lake & Online for All of Minnesota
Tarriance is about choice. We choose to make time to rest. To heal. To enjoy the world. In naming my therapy practice Tarriance, I hoped to encourage people to make the choice to seek counseling as a place of rest and healing, so they can find joy in their worlds. If this sounds like what you’re seeking, I hope you’ll consider working with me. I’m Kathy Johnson, a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC) located in the St. Paul-Minneapolis area. I provide in-person counseling services to adults residing in the Twin City Metro Area at my White Bear Lake practice, and I can offer secure, online counseling sessions to adults anywhere within the State of Minnesota. Is Counseling Right for Me?
Below, you’ll find some guiding questions to help you determine if counseling is right for you:
Are you struggling with mood issues such as anxiety or depression?
Are you finding it difficult to deal with a challenging situation in your life, be it relational, professional, or transitional?
Are you having trouble dealing with a traumatic or crisis event?
Are you finding wounds from the past interfering with your ability to enjoy the present fully?
Are you having difficulty getting past struggles despite utilizing your already present knowledge and resources?
Is Online Counseling the Right Option for Me?
Though face-to-face counseling may be optimal for connection with a therapist it is often not practical for a number of reasons. Consider your answers to the following questions to determine whether or not online counseling is your best option:
Are you currently residing in the state of Minnesota and will be in Minnesota during all scheduled counseling sessions, but you live outside of the St. Paul-Minneapolis area?
Is transportation to my White Bear Lake practice challenging? Will traveling to in-person sessions regularly be difficult for you or place extra pressure on a loved one who helps you with travel, childcare, and other logistics?
Do you live farther away than you are comfortable traveling regularly to meet with me, but you feel that my experience and areas of expertise align with your needs better than those counselors who are available closer to you?
Do you live in a rural setting that has little or no access to therapy professionals?
Do work and family obligations make it difficult to fit the time of travel and therapy sessions into your already packed schedule?
Do you prefer talking through difficult subjects in your home? Would you feel more at ease sipping a cup of coffee or tea in the comfort of your favorite chair as you talk through the tough stuff that brought you to therapy?

Depression
Depression may also be referred to as major depressive disorder or clinical depression. It can have any number of underlying causes, symptoms, and effects on your life. While this is one of the most commonly diagnosed mood and cognitive disorders, it is also a very serious condition. Depression can dramatically impact every area of your life. Just getting up in the morning can be a struggle. Work, diet, sleep, self-care, and relationships can all be adversely impacted by untreated depression.
Anxiety
Anxiety typically presents itself in one or more of the following ways: thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. Everyone gets a bit nervous at times, but those who meet clinical criteria for anxiety find that the troubling thoughts, fearful emotions, or physical symptoms of anxiety interfere with daily living.
Grief and Loss
Grief is the natural reaction to loss. It has to do with pain, sadness, and suffering. Grief and loss can be about more than losing a loved one. We may lose a dream, a job, a future, a relationship, a pet, or our sense of identity. There are numerous aspects to grief and various tasks to move through during the process of grieving. Acceptance of the loss, processing the feelings of the loss, finding a way to navigate daily life, and moving forward while maintaining an enduring relationship with the person we have lost are all aspects of grieving. Sometimes grief is complicated. Sometimes it is hard to begin grieving and sometimes people get stuck during the process and are unable to move forward. Whether you are moving through a normal grief process or getting stuck along the way, a compassionate and trained listener can gently help you through.
Spirituality
For some people, spirituality is a source of comfort, strength, and guidance but for others, past spiritual experiences have left scars or even done immense harm. At Tarriance, you are welcome to process spiritual issues regardless of perspective. I bring a wealth of experience helping people address a full range of spiritual issues to therapy sessions, including walking alongside people who have had extremely harmful or even abusive spiritual experiences. I welcome the opportunity to join you in your journey of spiritual discovery and healing.
Trauma and PTSD
Human brains are naturally wired to heal and make sense of life’s experiences. However, there are times when circumstances overwhelm one’s natural ability to sort things out, leaving a person feeling traumatized. Whether or not full criterion for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is met, there is hope and help for healing trauma through therapy.
Stress
Everyone experiences stressors. Sometimes, these stressors go beyond available resources and stress builds up in the mind, body, and emotions. A therapist can come alongside to help you sort through your stressors, see what might be eliminated or minimized, and increase your internal and external resources to deal with stress.
Relationship Issues
While I do not offer couples or marital counseling, a relational lens may be used during individual counseling, which can help you sort out your part in relational issues. This provides an extremely helpful perspective for working with individuals as they sort out their own emotions and develop the ability to communicate and connect effectively in their relationships.
