Therapy to Address Issues Related to Spirituality in St. Paul-Minneapolis
Online Therapy Sessions Available for all Minnesota Residents
As a therapist, I truly believe that people need to grow into full, authentic versions of themselves emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Spirituality isn’t necessarily about religion, though it may be. Spirituality is about developing a deeper and more profound connection with something greater than ourselves. Unfortunately, religious practices and spiritual teachings are led and taught by people who are flawed. This can lead to wounds that separate a person from their faith and deeper experience of spiritual fulfillment. If you’re struggling within your faith or with your sense of spirituality, I can provide support to help you work through these areas of struggle. I’m Kathy Johnson, a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). In addition to my experience as a therapist, I have served both stateside and internationally in Christian ministry and missions. I’ve seen firsthand the positive aspects of ministry as well as the negative effects that occur due to broken systems and people within faith backgrounds. I have also helped many individuals sort out issues of spiritual abuse, learning how to understand this unique type of abusive system and how it impacts communities and the individuals within those communities. I am passionate about walking alongside people who are navigating issues of spirituality. You can learn more on this page or by reaching out to schedule a consultation or initial session.
Who Would Consider Therapy for Spirituality & Faith Issues?
If you want to grow, sustain, or heal your spiritual life or you’re in need of help working through trauma related to faith and spirituality, therapy may be a good option. Some of the reasons people work with me for help navigating issues of faith and spirituality include:
Deconstructing and reconstructing faith and processing questions of faith
Recovering from spiritual abuse or trauma
Navigating questions and feelings about the religion of your childhood to determine what you want to keep and what is sensible to leave behind
Developing personal belief systems
Understanding how faith or spirituality can function in your life
How Can Therapy Help with Issues of Faith & Spirituality?
Therapy sessions with me are a safe space to explore your experiences with spirituality – the good and the bad. You will never receive judgement or criticism from me. Instead, you will have the compassionate ear of someone who has seen it all, so to speak, over the years. If you’re recovering from a traumatic or challenging experience within your faith community, experiencing spiritual crisis, or overcoming trauma connected with spirituality, therapy can be an important part of the process of working through just about any complex emotions, thoughts, and experiences related to spirituality. As a therapist, I have the skillset necessary to help my clients develop strategies to manage these difficult situations and increase resilience. As a Christian who has seen many people struggle with concerns rooted in faith and spirituality, I have additional first-hand experience supporting clients who are working through concerns specifically related to their faith and spirituality.
What if I Want to Incorporate My Faith Practices Into Therapy Sessions?
I welcome people from all faith backgrounds and people with no affiliation to any faith tradition. I will always provide space for my clients to incorporate their own spirituality into their therapy sessions should they desire to do so. As a therapist who is also a Christian I am happy to incorporate prayer or other spiritual practices should a client request it, and I am also sensitive to the possibility that the absence of spiritual practices in therapy may be most helpful in light of painful past experiences. You can feel safe and comfortable expressing any spiritual beliefs, questions, doubts, or lack of belief.
